For centuries man has worshipped the sun and still does. For most of us the sun brightens our lives promoting a healthier outdoor way of life. But this needn’t be a dream for these areas of Spain average 320 sunshine days per year (more than almost anywhere in mainland Europe) and is the perfect choice to buy a home for holiday, an investment or permanent living. With scheduled flights from the UK by all the low-cost operators to Alicante, everywhere in the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida is within easy reach. Driving South from the exclusive Northern town of Denia through the tourist resorts of Benidorm and Torrevieja to La Manga, you will find a landscape dotted with pretty towns and tranquil villages, narrow stretches of rocky shore-line, long sandy beaches, gentle land-scapes and golf courses with a backdrop of rugged mountain scenery.
The principal city in the Costa Blanca is Alicante, a wonderful elegant city with a modern harbour development overlooked by the 16th century castle (Castillo de Santa Barbara). The main city focus is the magnificent Explanada de España, a palm-lined promenade along the waterfront. With a population of 270,000 Alicante offers everything you’d expect from a commercial centre plus fast road connections to the tourist resorts of Benidorm and Torrevieja.
Costa Blanca's second city is that of historical Elche set in Europe’s largest natural palm forest -now a protected national treasure endorsed by UNESCO. The blue-domed Baroque church, the Basilica de Santa María was built in the 17th century to host the Misteri d’Elx a unique liturgical drama played every August. Evidence of Moorish occupation can still be seen with the Arabic Baths on the banks of what was the River Vinalopó.
The beaches are all ‘Blue-flag’ accredited. This means the soft, golden sands of the Costa Blanca and Costa Cálida shorelines conform to the highest standards of quality and safety set by the European Union. In summary they are safe, clean and free from pollutants.
The regional cuisines of the Costa Blanca and Costa Cálida differentiate themselves from other Mediterranean cuisines by using the produce of the plains -oranges, lemons, almonds, orchard fruit, rice and a range of home-grown vegetables. Rice provides the base for numerous paella dishes while fresh, locally caught fish is widely available in markets throughout the region. Further inland on higher ground, the cuisine is warmer with meat and bean stews (estofados) accompanied by locally produced red wine a favourite with locals. In general, the Costa Blanca and the Costa Cálida have literally hundreds of tapas bars and café restaurants in which to enjoy the local cuisines alfresco style.
